Auralizations

Guillaume Loizillon

The term auralization is borrowed from a discipline, branch of architectural acoustics, which is dedicated to the reconstruction of the acoustics of a building, an urban space or a soundscape of the past.

Mirroring this research, the object here is not to develop a scientific approach aimed to authenticity, but to install a set of free fictional constructions, developing between the gaze and the listening.

This installation project proposes to compose sound events from synthesized sounds that can suggest a possible reality. These audio creations are then integrated into montages, often of small in size, made with recycled objects, postcards, photographs or digital images. It can also be the sole insertion of an audio sequence in a layout present in the exhibition space: tree, plant mass, visible electrical device, piping and meters, written message or safety equipment. This juxtaposition produces an imaginary work linking these elements. Each of these scenes is autonomous while being in dialogue with its neighborhood. They do not impose silence to the wandering listener.

This work, always in evolution, is designed to adapt itself to the different spaces likely to accommodate it. The elements presented on this page, both sound and visual, are only approaches made with components that can be combined according to other arrangements. The sound sequences are not systematically to be attributed to the images shown. In terms of sounds, the absence of this temporal dimension that is the infinite loop (which is often constitutive of the device) does not allow to fully account for the environmental aspect of the auralizations..

You will also find on the page photos taken during different past events.

If the "auralization" is not directly in situ,
it can be developped from a photograph
and produce an "aural graffiti".br>

Although using a wide range of sound creation techniques, a significant amount of auralizations, particularly those of new developments, are based on a palette created with the physical model synthesis tool Modalys (developed at IRCAM). This programming language allows the creation of sound events that install in the listening an ambiguity between the real and the artificial, the true and the false.

A rectangular plate is struck at two points on its surface. A string of varying length is excited by a magnet of random polarity. La voix de Gaston Bachelard est injectée dans une barre de métal pour la faire résonner. In ModaLisp: "run script" (script menu).

The resulting sounds of this tool generate a perception articulated on the energetic plausibility of events and on the simulation of textures and materials. Its use can be seen as writing a fiction in a constrained formal language. The characters are objects defined according to strictly quantitative physical dimensions. Forces that vary over time apply to these objects. Ultimately, it is the sound result of these scenarios that is taken into account.

The auralizations are a continuation of work carried out for more than a decade, visiting musical forms and temporal organizations in relation with the environment. They are designed to be displayed in open circulation spaces, a garden, a public park, a conference room, a café, as well as in a wide variety of sites, to be determined.
These different events took place in places not usually dedicated to artistic expression, according to several modes of presentation: concerts accompanied by images, performances, ballads, installations, etc. The approach advocates the use of portable "lofi" equipment, economical, low in energy consumption and is placed in a certain "do it yourself" aesthetic.
